Victoria may end lockdown tomorrow if rate of infection continues to go down

Premier of Victoria Daniel Andrews has given the clearest indications that the lockdown will not be extended this week.

Andrews said the state is “well-placed” to end its fifth lockdown as planned this week, though some restrictions are likely to remain for some time.

The statewide lockdown was called on July 15 due to an outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant, which originated from cases in NSW.

Victoria’s lockdown was meant to end after five days, but was extended for a week until 11.59pm on Tuesday.

Andrews expressed hope Sunday that the lockdown would not be extended again, saying the rate of infections were going down. He however said Monday and Tuesday’s performance will seal their decision

The State recorded 11 new locally acquired COVID-19 cases on Sunday, all linked to known outbreaks who were in quarantine for their entire infectious period.

There are 179 active cases in the state, 17 are hospitalised including two people who are in intensive care unit.

Andrew told reporters that the falling numbers of infections were within the trend they expected to see.

“I will foreshadow, there will still be rules after midnight Tuesday, it’ll be important that we all follow them.”
