NSW cabinet goes into overdrive as Covid-19 infections continue to swell

All is not well in NSW as COVID-19 crisis continues to wreck havoc in Sydney.

And a criss cabinet meeting is on, trying to come up with ways of handling the pandemic following a surge in daily infections and an unsanctioned violent street protest in Sydney with thousands of unmasked people defying lockdown restrictions.

There is no end in sight to the lockdown for Greater Sydney and four surrounding regions which has entered its fifth week.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian could not deny nor confirm that the lockdown will be extended to mid-September.

“I don’t know where that story came from. It certainly wasn’t from me or anybody that’s in the know because we’re still working all that out.”

Berejiklian however maintained that some restrictions will remain in force until the majority of the population was vaccinated.

“If there’s anything that we can ease we absolutely will,” she said.

“It is literally a day by day, week by week issue.”

The premier regretted the weekend anti-lockdown protest, which she described as a potential super-spreader event.

“We won’t know for about a week the extent to which that may have set us back,” in terms of infection numbers, she told Nine Network on Monday.

By 8 pm on Saturday, NSW had recorded 141 new local virus cases in the 24 hours.

In an ugly turn of events about 3,500 people took to the streets in Sydney on Saturday protesting against the lockdown.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation has urged residents of Greater Sydney to gets vaccinated with any available vaccine including AstraZeneca and break the wait for Pfizer.

The available AstraZeneca is being shunned by Australians who view it as unsafe after cases of blood clotting were reported while the preferred Pfizer supplies are scarce.

Only 15.4 per cent of eligible NSW residents have been vaccinated.
