ANCYL provincial leader in custody after alleged rape

What started as an ordinary caucus meeting held by the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) at the University of SA in Pretoria turned ugly after one of the league’s senior members was arrested for alleged rape.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has since resigned from his full-time job in one of the Gauteng government departments after a charge was laid against him.

After the rape charge was laid on Friday, the man handed himself over to the SA Police Service in Sunnyside, where he is being held. He also stepped down from the ANCYL provincial task team with immediate effect. The alleged rape took place on Tuesday.

In his statement, the man said he was resigning from both positions so he could focus on the case.

“As an activist, I am against all forms of abuse of women and children. It is for this reason that I am committing myself to cooperate with any investigation to be instituted against me,” he said.

“I will accordingly be handing myself to the nearest police station to start the process of clearing my name.”

The ANCYL in Gauteng condemned the incident and said it supported the victim.

“As the country commemorates 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, the ANCYL in Gauteng has learnt with absolute disappointment and disgust of the sexual assault allegations levelled against the provincial task team member,” read the statement.

“The scourge of gender-based violence deprives women of their bodily integrity and inflicts long-lasting trauma to those affected.

“It is therefore important that, as the ANCYL in Gauteng, we support the victim and ensure that perpetrators face the full might of the law, irrespective of the position they may hold in society,” it added.

The ANCYL in Gauteng welcomed the decision by the accused to resign from both positions. It said it would refer the matter to the provincial disciplinary committee for further action.

“Incidents of sexual violation ought to be handled with the resoluteness and sensitivity they deserve. As such, we are unapologetically on the side of the victim,” read the statement.

“Incidents of this nature are a manifestation of deeply rooted toxic masculinity, misogyny and a disturbing rape culture that seems to thrive in male-dominated spaces such as political organisations.”

The man is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow.
