ACT government bails out Tourism industry from COVID-19 ripple effects

The ACT Government has come to the rescue of the Tourism business operations as a string of travel restrictions cuts deep in the financial muscles of the industry.

The government announced a series funding initiatives to cushion the Canberra tourism industry from the harsh effects of the ongoing bout of COVID lockdowns.

Border closures to Canberra and the Greater Sydney lockdown negatively impacted the local tourism-related businesses and the hardest his being the hotels and tourism operators.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr revealed that the government would give financial support of up to $75,000 to individual accommodation providers and $15,000 to small private tourism operators.

On addition to that, close to 90 accommodation providers and 20 privately operated tourism venues have been invited to apply for a full rebate on the water and sewerage fixed charge component of their Icon Water bills for the first two quarters of 2021-22.

Also scheduled to benefit from the Small Tourism Operator COVID Recovery Payment are small tourism operators and boutique accommodation providers.

“This payment of up to $15,000 will assist with a range of business expenses. Eligibility will require evidence of a 30 per cent loss of revenue in July 2021 compared to April 2021 and of expenses incurred,” said Barr.

Vehicle registration fee waivers for hire cars and charter buses registered in the ACT will be extended for another six months until 30 March 2022.

The current registration waiver supports approximately 40 local operators.
